Şirince Village: A Hidden Gem in Turkey’s Aegean Region
Nestled in the hills of Turkey’s Aegean region, just 8 kilometers from the ancient city of Ephesus, lies the picturesque village of Şirince. Known for its charming stone houses, lush vineyards, and rich history, Şirince is a destination that offers a unique blend of culture, nature, and tranquility.
A Brief History of Şirince

Şirince’s history dates back to the 5th century, when it was originally a Greek settlement. The village was originally called “Kırkınca,” which means “forty” in Turkish, allegedly named after the forty houses that once made up the village. Over time, this name evolved into “Çirkince,” meaning “ugly,” as a means to deter outsiders from settling in the area. However, in the early 20th century, the name was changed to Şirince, which means “pleasant,” reflecting the village’s true nature.
Following the Greco-Turkish War and the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1923, Şirince became home to Turkish settlers from Greece. The village’s unique architectural style, with its narrow streets and stone houses, is a blend of both Greek and Turkish influences, offering visitors a glimpse into its multicultural past.
Exploring the Village
One of the most striking features of Şirince is its well-preserved architecture. The village is filled with traditional stone houses, many of which have been restored and converted into boutique hotels, cafes, and shops. The houses are typically two-story structures with whitewashed walls, red-tiled roofs, and wooden shutters, creating a harmonious blend with the surrounding landscape.
Visitors can spend hours wandering through the village’s narrow, cobbled streets, exploring the various shops that sell local handicrafts, olive oil, and wine. Şirince is particularly famous for its fruit wines, which are made from a variety of fruits such as pomegranate, blackberry, and mulberry. A visit to one of the village’s many wine houses offers the perfect opportunity to sample these unique flavors.
The Charm of Local Culture
Şirince is not just a visual delight; it’s also a place where you can experience traditional Turkish hospitality. The locals are known for their warmth and friendliness, often inviting visitors into their homes for tea or coffee. The village is also home to several small, family-run restaurants that serve delicious Aegean cuisine, including fresh salads, mezes, and homemade pastries.
For those interested in history, a visit to the Church of St. John the Baptist is a must. This historic church, located in the heart of the village, dates back to the 19th century and is a testament to the village’s Greek Orthodox heritage. The church’s interior is adorned with beautiful frescoes, and its peaceful courtyard offers a serene spot for reflection.
The Natural Beauty of Şirince
Şirince’s location in the hills provides stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The village is surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, and orchards, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers. There are several walking trails around the village, offering opportunities to explore the area’s natural beauty. One popular route takes visitors up to the Tumulus Hill, where they can enjoy panoramic views of the village and the surrounding landscape.
Şirince and the 2012 Mayan Apocalypse
Şirince gained international attention in 2012 when it was rumored to be one of the few places in the world that would survive the Mayan apocalypse. According to the legend, the village’s positive energy and mystical aura would protect it from the predicted end of the world. Although the apocalypse didn’t happen, the village saw a surge in visitors, many of whom came to experience its unique atmosphere.

“Private Ephesus and Sirince Village Tour from Kusadasi Port with lunch” is perfect. Lunch is so great. I liked it.
Didn’t expect to see this in Turkey. Having traveled all over Greece far and wide, I was absolutely sure that there were no repetitions in the world. Wrong, sorry. And that’s why I recommend it! For all that, it is basically a remake, like the Palace of Knossos in Crete. But restored quite neatly.
All of us know that time is very important during our travel. If we want to visit any where we should be there on the time and our travel should be very fast.
If you think like me, you should choose this agency Ephesustours.org, if you want to visit Ephesus or do you have any plans to visit there.
They organized a special VIP Ephesus Tour for us. The vehicle was Sprinter and so modern, luxurious too. The driver informed us, that they can be there in 1 hour. It likes so hard. But we were in Ephesus in one hour really.
Thank you very much.
